The author of “To Kill a Mockingbird” is by Harpee Lee, and
I would relate to his other books, but I’ve never read any. This was about a
father of two kids, who struggles to find ways to protect an African American
from be prosecuted for “raping” a little Caucasian girl. This book is all about
discrimination and how bad it was, then. The family had many struggles to get
through to protect this man. The kids also got into some problems, which will
make this a little more interesting for younger persons. They meet a lot of new
friends and there are some great, but sad stories.
The characters of this story are important. You get attached to them and you understand them. The
main character of the book was “Scout”. She is intelligent for a young lady and
knows how to pack-a-punch. She always beats up on her brother and they are
always getting into ridiculous arguments. The father of the story is Addicus
Finch and he is very smart and nice. His son’s name is “Jem”. Jem isn’t the
smartest one in the world, but he sure is funny. They also live with a black
woman named “Calpurnia”, she was their cook. Calpurnia, herself was also
hilarious. These are all great characters and they’re easy to get along with
and relate.
This book is VERY good, but confusing. Sometimes a little
too much goes on at once. This book also gets very boring, but the boring parts
are the most important. I would recommend this book if you’re into books that
take place in the south, awhile back. This is also a sad book and I would not
recommend younger children read “To Kill a Mockingbird”. It is also some-what
challenging to read, because the dialogue is how southerners write and speak. I
loved reading this book, and if you’re like me, you would too.
