Skybreaker

Skybreaker, by Kenneth Oppel is one of several books he has published.  An award winning author, this is the first book by this author that I have read.  An exciting suspenseful, adventure, this story contains action, a love story, and a clever twist on the conventional shipwreck story.

The Hyperion, an airship was launched as an experiment by the greatest inventor of the time.  Due to a severe storm the ship was launched into the sky and the crew perished.  Leaving the ship and all of its possessions including millions in gold, up for grabs by pirates.

Matt Cruse, a student at a prestigious air academy, while on a training run accidentally located the ruins of the Hyperion.  Teaming with Kate De Vries, a friend of Matt’s and Hans, a handsome captain of his own ship, they form a team of salvagers with the goal of gold from the Hyperion.  Matt has to be rescued by a mysterious gypst; she too eventually joins the team.

Egocentric salvagers working together provides plenty of conflict in this adventure.  Matt has some trust issues when it comes to Hans.  Can he trust that Hans will share the treasure?  Can he trust that Hans won’t deceive him and Kate?  Each character has their own agenda when it comes to the prize they are seeking on the ship.  Can anyone be trusted?

Skybreaker is a good book.  It is filled with action and characters that you both love and hate.  The author was descriptive enough to convince you that the Hyperion could be a real airship.  This is a must read!  Extremely descriptive, suspenseful, and action packed people of all ages would enjoy this book.
