Inside Out and Back Again

This book is about a little girl named Thanhha Lai. She was born in Vietnam and moved to Alabama. In 1975, when she was 10 years old, she escaped from South Vietnam, leaving the world she knew and loved. Thanhha Lai shares in words how her family escaped Vietnam before the fall of Saigon. This book is pretty much a diary of her life moving from Vietnam to Alabama. She describes about her journey on a boat for a week with her family. She tells about how the United States is different from the landscapes to the food to the little things. The United States of America is nothing compared to Vietnam.  It is also different because of the coldness of its strangers. Thanhha also tells about getting bullied for what she believes and how she looks. They called her “BUDA” because she was Asian and called her “pancake face” for the shape of her head. They pulled her hair and chased her until she started to cry in tears.  The moving situation had a big impact on her because she had friends and family still living in Vietnam.

I thought that this book was very life changing because it shows you her point of view and how she felt all this time in every single detail.  It also helped me understand what it is like to move to a whole different country. Basically the book shows there are people out there that suffer more than you.

I would recommend this book because it teaches different ways of life and the suffering people have to go through. It also teaches about her culture.  It’s not a hard book to read and once you read it you won’t be able to stop.
