I had the chance to read the book Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie written by Jordan Sonnenblick. Steven Alper is an ordinary
teenage boy that is a talented young drummer with creativity that can often
side track him from what's most important. One day his life takes a dramatic
turn when his five-year-old brother Jeffery is diagnosed with leukemia. He has
to cope with worrying about his brothers health and preparing for his huge
drumming solo. Stevens drumming contest would not only earn him a since of popularity
but it would also earn him the attention from a girl named Renee Albert.
When his fellow classmates learn about his younger
brothers health it attracts the attention of everyone, and people began to notice
him. Throughout out the story Stevens family battles with making various trips
to doctors appointments for Jeffery, hoping for better but sometimes finding
out worse. Steven meets a friend name Sam, at the hospital only to find out
later that she lost her battle with cancer.
This novel centers on one family's journey to overcome a
unexpected situation, and the brotherly love of two siblings. This young adult
fiction book is told in chapters focused on Stevens point of view, which is
written in first person point of view. I would have to say this story focuses
on the fact that you should focus on things you can change rather than the
things you cannot.
Despite the curiosity I endured while reading Drums,
Girls, and Dangerous Pie I would highly recommend this book to others. This
novels title is a great eye catcher and so is the story its self. Sonnenblick
has also written After Ever After which focuses on Jeffery's point of view.
