The Fire Within is a lovely little novel written by Chris
D’lacey and is the first book in the last dragon chronicles. It is a mild
fantasy novel that is probably suited for light easy readers, no rush or
chasing, or fighting is included in this book, the next ones aren’t as
friendly. But let’s focus on this book with its easily loved characters and
cute but mysterious plot.
This is a book about dragons made out of clay. This novel
begins with a letter to Liz Pennykettle written by our main character David
Rain. He explains that he is going to a nearby college and needs a place to
stay and is really glad that a room was available in her home. He says he is
okay with cats, good with children, but he hasn’t seen any dragons lately and
didn’t know if that was a problem. Arriving at Pennykettle household he meets
the cats, Liz and Lucy Pennykettle (Lucy is Liz’s daughter) and the dragons.
The dragons turn out to be clay figurines made by Liz in her pottery room
dubbed the Dragon Den. David gets his own dragon which he named Gadzooks (a
dragon holding a pad and pencil making him a writing dragon).
I would recommend this book for people looking for a calm
fantasy novel. But be warned that the sequels become more dramatic/action
centric so it not all happy go lucky all the time. Still I enjoy the series as
a whole watching as all the characters progress together till the last book,
which looks really good.
