The River

For my book review I chose The River by Gary Paulsen. The River Is the second book in the Hatchet Series.  The River compares to some of Gary Paulsen’s books in the sense that Some of his other books such as Brian’s winter, Brian’s Return and Brian’s Hunt are all revolved around the same character and the characters adventures. This story is about a boy Brian who has to try and teach an environmental survival school instructor how he survived in the wilderness with nothing but a hatchet. The theme of this story is that no matter how hard your difficulties are you will always find away to overcome them.

In the first book of the Hatchet series “The Hatchet” Brian is the only survivor in a plane crash and he survives in the wilderness with nothing but a hatchet for 54 days. In the second book “The River” Brian is asked by an environmental survival school instructor to teach him how he survived so he could teach other people if they were every in a life or death situation like Brian was. After long consideration Brian agrees. Brain and the instructor, Derek goes into the wilderness with nothing but a couple knives a radio and some small tools. But when a Freak storm hits Derek is hit with lightning and falls into a coma.  With the radio dead and no way to communicate to get help Brian has to build a raft and try and Make his way to a trading post miles away and keep Derek alive.

I liked this book and would recommend anyone to read it. The book from the beginning was interesting. There were no boring parts of the books. This book was also interesting because it takes you through Brian’s thought process through out the story.
