Room

The story Room by Emma Donoghue is a real life fiction, it is something that could happen is everyday life but still isn’t a true story. Room is about a 5 year old boy who has lived in captivity with his mother who was kidnapped many years ago. The boy is finally free but is having trouble adapting to the whole new life ahead of him.

The main character of this story is 5 year old Jack who lives with his mother or ‘Ma’. His mother had been kidnapped 7 years ago by a man referred to as Old Nick. Ma was kept in a room with nothing and was forced to raise a child and have the role of mother, friend, teacher, and protector. Ma knows this isn’t the life she wants for Jack, so they decide to get out. When they are out of room and living in the outside world everything is so different for Jack and he isn’t so sure he likes it. Read this story and the reader will find out how jack starts his new life in the outside world. It’s a good reminder that there are predators out there that will kidnap you and it’s a very scary thing. And it also shows sometimes change can be scary but it can also be for the better, like with Jack’s situation.

This story gives you a whole different perspective because Jack, who is 5 is the narrator. It makes the story have less gruesome details of the kidnapping of Old Nick compared to if an adult was telling the story. There is the innocence of the child in the point of view. This story had too many dull patches to keep my interest. Not enought excitement that I would say this is a great book. Overall I think that the book had a good outline but Emma Donoghue could have added more plot twists to keep it interesting, overall I don’t think I would recommend this book to anyone.
