Hole in my Life

Hole in my Life is an epic novel about Jack Gantos. It is an autobiography about how he went from an aspiring writer to a federal criminal, trying to make money for tuition money. This book is a personal account of his riveting tale of adventure.

Jack Gantos was an ordinary man in his mid 20's seeking to pursue a higher level education as a writer but like every person he has a few roadblocks. One is alcoholism which got him kicked out of his parents house because he passed out on their front lawn after having a few to many. Jack needed money and fast and one of the ways that he knew how to get quick money was to go into business with Rik, a shady character who dealt drugs. Jack's father had heard of Rik and knew the kind of shady business that he was involved in. So to avoid that conflict Jack did not tell his father that he would be going to work on a ship carrying hash(drug) with Rik. Jack needed about 10,000 dollars to pay for college and that was the kind of money that Rik's job was paying, so Jack felt that he had no other choice. Then there was Hamilton. Hamilton was the sailor, the captain of the ship. Even though he didn't have much experience he knew what he was doing he had been in the British Navy. So that was the crew on the Beaver. Wven though Jack knew he needed the money he was very afraid to sail to New York with the large amounts of hash they had on the boat. Even though Jack wanted to be a writer he has never actually tried, i guess you can say that him, Rik, and Hamilton being chased by the FBI and thrown in jail was a blessing in disguise. It gave him just the opportunity to not only tell his story but to also pursue the career he wanted and that wasn't selling hash.

I recommend this book highly. It gets 5/5 marks from me. It is a very good story and has lots of well placed imagery. Hole in my Life is a very imagineable story from a realistic standpoint. If you are looking for something to read this would be a good book to read.
