Thirteen Reasons Why

Intro: Thirteen Reasons Why is written by Jay Asher. Jay Asher writes modern day novels for people in their teen years. He has also written Before I fall, Premeditated, and All the Bright Places. All of Asher’s books have to do with teen relationships and teen troubles. They all have a bit of mystery in them too.  They all discuss about teen problems that may be troubling to talk about but he makes it easy to read about. The theme for Thirteen Reasons Why is that everyone has a reason for their actions, some good and some bad.

Summary: This story is about a girl’s reason for why she committed suicide. This book also deals with drugs, rape, and police. Hannah Baker committed suicide and created cassette tapes for the people who pushed her to her breaking point to listen to. Clay was the last person to receive the tapes and was oblivious to why he would be on the tapes. The tapes had a map that went with them for the people to follow while listening. The tapes also come with a warning that if anyone failed to pass them along; they would become public. These tapes came with a lot of power.

Analysis/Review: This book makes it easy to talk about difficult teen problems, such as suicide. It takes a direct approach at what is right in wrong in teens lives. I think everyone should read this book to have a better understanding about the troubles teens experience today. This is a book that would be better to read sooner rather than later.

  1. I would be very interested in reading this book. I love genres such as fictional mysteries and the plot sounds very interesting and I want to read more. What I found intriguing about the book is the suspenseful theme that real life situations that draws a connection to the reader. Thirteen Reasons Why reminds me of a TV series that I enjoyed watching. The show that connects with this book is Pretty Little Liars. In Pretty Little Liars, it deals with many of the same themes as in Thirteen Reason Why. Both are very suspenseful, both play a "game" to create mystery. The book uses cassette tapes as clues to the reason of the situation. In the TV show, a character named A uses lots of clues that are forced upon the four main characters and some are life threatening decisions that they have to make.Overall, I would definitely read this book. -Sophie Hall

I love mystery books. and this seems like a very suspenseful, edge of your seat type of book. This also reminds me of a couple tv shows I love to watch. Many of them relate to this book. The mystery behind the cassette tapes draw me in and make me even more interested in reading the book.
