The Chaos

The Book The Chaos is a fiction novel, was published June 7th 2010 by Chicken House. It was written by Rachel Ward and is the second book of the Numbers Trilogy.  It takes place after the book Numbers and before the book Infinity. Ward usually writes teen novels. The book numbers is written in a very unique way; It switches between perspectives of two of the main characters.  I found this to be confusing at first, but it allows the reader to see details they normally wouldn't be able to. The two main characters are Adam, a teenage boy who has his ability to see the dates of ones death, and Sarah who is a damaged teen who has a re-occurring nightmare. The plot takes place when Adam meets Sarah, as Sarah sees her nightmare getting one step closer to reality.  Sarah wants to flee, while Adam chases after her, wanting to know why.  The characters learn and accept that in the end death will come, though the time may not clear.  They discover it's important to not live your whole life in fear of what tomorrow brings.

The story starts in 2026 and continues until early 2027.  After flood level rise in Adams home on the English seaside, Adam and his great grandmother Val are evacuated to the main setting of the story. They're sent to London a place where they both no bad is to come.  Adam like his mom from the first book can see when someone ill die, except his ability also shows a brief description how.  About half of the story is told through  his eyes. The other half is told by a beautiful, yet damaged teenage girl.  She has a vivid nightmare that she sees every time she sleeps involving a scarred man taking her scarred child into a wall of fire.  She sees the scarred man looks identical to Adam and runs from home, in attempt to flee him.  She finds a girl who offers her a place in her apartment.  The girl says she's going to have to pay later on but in a place full of strangers her money is stolen soon after she arrives.  After meeting some new people she explains how she is with child and Vinny, on of the strangers, lets her stay, as his sister died in a back alley abortion.  Adam goes to Sarah's house and found that she had run away.  Adam searches for her while continuing a "study" he began a while back.  A death journal with descriptions and dates of people deaths.  So many people are going to dies on the 1st through 4th of January 2027.  Sarah hopes to keep her child safe, while Adam searches for her and hopes to evacuate London; They both end of struggling to achieve their goals.

I recommend this book to people 13 and up.  The story does have many things that can be confusing to younger children.  The have some suggestive parts in it which may discomfort for some people.  The book has parts that include drugs, prostitution, violence, criminal activity, and other thing that may not be suited for some people.  The book ends in a cliff hanger that really gets you to want to read the final book, Infinity.  The Chaos had me reading it every day until I got to the end.  there is little to no "boring" parts and had a lot of suspense.  I enjoyed the book and would recommend it to others, but it is my opinion, which may be different than others.  Even so, if you have enjoyed the first book in the series, I recommend you read this book, but only after you read the first.
