This book review is about “Lockdown” by Walter Dean Myers.
He has written “Shooter”, “Monster”, and “Scorpions”. “Lockdown” is very
similar to the other books that he has written. Myers’ books are about tens in
jail and the struggles of black teens.
Reese Anderson is a fourteen-year-old in Progress Detention Facility for
stealing prescription pads from a doctor’s office. While in jail he makes an
unlikely friend that gives him lessons for getting through tough times. The
theme of this book is personal responsibility.
Reese has been at Progress for two years, he dreadfully
wanted to be released from the jail. The administration saw that he had good
behavior and decided to place him on a program to shorten his sentence. Mr.
Cintron is one of the people that works at Progress and has always believed
that Reese had potential to in the program. One day he is taken to the police
station to be interrogated by police about the death of a woman caused by a
drug overdose. He is facing twenty years in a federal prison for the death; He
must try to that he only stole the pads and didn’t take any drugs from the
office. A part that I found intriguing was when Mr. Pugh said that his dad
always told him” the snake that’s gonna kill you is probably wearing your
damned shirt” (Myers 222).
I would recommend this book to others because it is a very
exciting and never gets boring. The people that would most enjoy this book are
those that like books that keep you hooked throughout the whole book and those
that like reading about violent, also those that want to know about the
struggles of others. This book has been one of the best that I have ever read. If
this doesn’t sound like you then I recommend that you read another book.
Book Review by Jeshua C.
I read half way through this book a couple years back and was enjoying it until i lost track of the book. From the looks of this review, it has me thinking that maybe I should pick it up and finish reading it. Stories of incarceration have always intrigued me.
ReplyDeleteThis book looks to be a good read. I like police and action sort of books, so this one kind of falls in under that category. I haven't read any books by this author, but I think I might have to. If the book is really good, I will have to read other books he has written. thanks for the review, it was helpful.
