Monster

The book I read was Monster by Walter Dean Myers. Myers has written very many teen books including, Fallen Angels, Slam!, Street love, and many more. He has written over one hundred books. These books are very similar because many have to do with different things about life in Harlem and maybe some of his experiences. Monster is a look through the eyes of someone on trial for murder and the theme to me is finding yourself and peer pressure.

Steve Harmon is on trial for murder. He was said to be the lookout for a robbery which ended in James King (encouraged Steven to join the robbery) Killing the store owner. Kathy O’Brian is Stevens’s defense attorney and is suspicious of him because she doesn’t know if he’s guilty or innocent but she still tries her best to defend him. The book is written in a way a movie script would look and everything is in third person basically. “Sometimes I feel like I have walked into the middle of a movie. Maybe I can make my own movie. The film will be the story of my life. No, not my life, but of this experience. I’ll call it what the lady prosecutor called me…. MONSTER.”  (Myers, Pg. 4)

I would recommend this book to others. I would recommend it because if you are into crime and that kind of thing then this book will interest you. When the book goes between his time on trial and events in his past life it gives good insight on what kind of person he is and really gives you a chance to make some of your own conclusions.

  1. This book sound very interesting to me; because the way Matthew describes it the author tells the story uniquely and ominously, The reviewer also used an interesting exert of the text that makes me want to read what happens after that text. The reviewer also tells us the core elements of the book that make it a must read but doesn't spoil any of the book. I enjoyed reading this review; it was put together intelligently, thoroughly, and excitingly. I will read this book whenever I can get my hands on it.

  2. This book sounds interesting to me because I like books about modern day things. This author seems to write about situations in real life where real kids are in danger and they must get out of the situations. This sounds intriguing because it is a book about a crime, and I like books about crime. This book seems like it might be similar to crime shows. I like crime shows because they are suspenseful and full of action. This seems like it would be like that.
