Kristin Levine has written The Best Bad Luck I’ve Ever Had
and two other books, The Paper Cowboy (http://www.kidsreads.com/reviews/the-paper-cowboy)
, and The Lions Of Little Rock. In The Lions Of Little Rock (http://www.schoolastic.com/teachers/book/lions-little-rock#cart/cleanup) and The Best Bad Luck I’ve Ever Had, they are
both about historical fictions, and have the same type of story line. In The
Best Bad Luck I’ve Ever Had, it is about a boy named Dit who meets this black
girl Emma, who just moved into town with her family in the early 1900’s. Blacks
are highly discriminated against, and Dit becomes close friends with Emma. He
and Emma go through mysteries and adventures in this discriminated time.
In this book, Dit and Emma have to face many challenges. The
main characters are Dit and Emma, but a native American, who owns a store, is
also a big part of the story. Emma and Dit face troubles with maintaining their
friendship because of the discriminating time, and find themselves in trouble.
They go on adventures and investigations to get out of the trouble they caused
and save the day. “We were almost back to the jail with our second load, and I
was just beggining to think we might pull this off, when Uncle Wiggens wandered
into the street." (levine, 152) this is one of my favorite and one of the
most exciting parts of the book in my opinion.
If you like action, mystery, and excitement, then this is a book for you. Especially if
you like historical fictions. You need to read this book if you are interested
in these things. If racial comments, or the "N" word doesn’t make you
feel comfortable then I don’t recommend this book for you. If you can handle
the Racism then I definitely recommend this book for you, it is intriguing
almost all the time, very exciting.
