Divergent

The book I read was called Divergent by Veronica Roth. The book was the first of a trilogy including Divergent, Insurgent, and Allegiance. This series is the only book Veronica has wrote. Divergent takes place in a Chicago of the future, where the world is divided to avoid threats. The theme of the book is all about family, identity, and courage.

Beatrice Prior was born in a world split into five factions Abnegation (selflessness), Candor (honesty), Erudite (intelligence), Amity (peace), and Dauntless (fearless/bravery). Beatrice was born into abnegation, but one day a year everyone age 16 must take an “aptitude test” which places them in a new faction along with their old faction and they must choose to leave their family or stay. When beatrice takes the test she receives three factions as options Abnegation, Dauntless and Erudite. This means that Beatrice is divergent, considered a threat to the society. On the  day of choosing beatrice joins dauntless and her brother ,caleb, chooses Erudite. When beatrice begins her new life she decides to change her name to Tris. In dauntless you must pass the initiation or you will become faction-less, similar to being homeless. Will Tris pass the test or will her life be destroyed by one choice?

I loved this book; It was a major page turner and grasped your attention from beginning to end. I would definitely recommend this book to others. I think this book is best suited for people who are interested in futuristic/dystopian stories, but anyone will love this book.

  1. I am very interested in reading this book, it seems to give a lot of mystery along with action and sort of gives a hint to what society is today. In this other text, Speak by Laurie Anderson, it shows this girl and her days trying to fit into high school and the factions there, but failing miserably due to something that has happened beforehand. Speak and Divergent are sort of similar in this way, where society is spilt into different factions, and it's interesting to see how things turn out in those situations for me.

  2. After finishing the review you wrote I would love to read this book. I think it sounds very interesting. It seems like there are hard choices that need to be made in the book by the characters and that is what challenges us throughout life. It sounds like a mystery in a way with how you're born into one group but when you reach a certain age you are left to take a test and see where you belong. I think this would be something I would enjoy reading since after seeing the movie I wanted to watch more. The book sounds even better!

  3. I can agree with every one who has commented on your review, after reading your review (even though I have already read this book) I want to read it again! You did an amazing job highlighting the key events in this book it is very well summarized and truly captures my attention. I especially liked how you focused on the beginning giving the reader that little taste and then leaving them dry , or thirsty wanting more information and forcing them to find out by reading the book. Well done!

I like how you explained the background information about the book, it made me want to know more. I like how you left it with nothing to know about the end, I think ill go read the book now.
