How to Save a Life

The book I just recently finished is titled How To Save aLife by Sara Zarr and it was published on January 1st in 2011. Sara Zarr is an author with 5 novels and she was nominated for National Book Award, she was also the finalist. She writes books mostly about teenage life and young adults topics. How To Save a Life was an excellent book with a theme about loss and empathy. The book is about 2 girls that tried to understand each other's life and perspective.

Jill MacSweeny is a 17 year-old teenage girl. She was living a perfectly normal life until one day she lost her dad. The tragic caused her to isolate herself from everyone who was trying to help her. Suddenly her mom dropped shocking news and announced she is going to adopt. Mandy Kalinowski is a girl with a life that is not so fortunate. She grew up feeling unwanted and not loved so when she got pregnant, she decided to give her baby up because she didn't want history to repeat itself. Mandy steps into Jill's life as Jill's mom agrees to adopt Mandy's child. Jill and Mandy struggle to understand each other as they learn how to forgive, deal with grief and when to let go.

There are some memorable quotes that really stick out to me. "No one measures a life in weeks and days. You measure life in years and by the things that happen to you." "Sometimes you should have something you don't need but that you want." "You don't get anything without giving up something."

The book is an amazing and wonderful piece of art. It taught me empathy, friendship and forgiveness. It helped me to learn how to let go, when is the right time to try new things and accepting pain as a part of life. Sara Zarr wrote the book with an accurate point of view of a teenager with complicated emotions. How To Save a Life is the kind of book that will make you not want to finish it because it's so good you just don't want it to end.

  1. I want to read this book because it seems like it's a heartwarming story. I like the thought reading a story like this, usually I love this genre to read. Also, the review of this book slightly drew me in as well. It also seems it'd touch on sad topics, which I would wanna read and see how the characters deal with and view some of these situations. I also like how the reviewer added the emotions they received while reading this story, as well as what it taught them to feel. I've heard of this book before and I'd love to read it.
