The White Mercedes

Philip Pullman

The Golden Compass and The Scuttle Knife are a few of his dark novels. The White Mercedes is more true to our world without all the dark material that you would find in other books he has written. The author uses the same settings in most of his books like it takes place in Oxford. The book is set in modern time. I have read most of his dark material novels and not much can compare with this specific story to the others he was written.

The theme to this book is, don’t trust everyone you know well. This theme is tell Chris that he should not trust people before he has a chance to get to know them better.

This story is about a boy and girl that fall in love with one another after meeting at the Oxford Collage summer ball. The boy is named Chris and he discovers something while searching for Jenny. He found out that trusting the wrong person can lead up to a tragic endings.  Jenny is killed by Chris’s boss. Carson kills her due to a mistaken identity.

The plot of this book was confusing to me through out some parts. I don’t understand how Jenny was mistaken for an identity. The book was week in explaining the crime and mystery part. This book also had a part with a graphic sexual scene.

I could tell by the first sentence I read in the story that someone would get killed at the end. The story overall was okay to read if you like love and romance with a tragic ending.
