The Fault in Our Stars

John Green is a very popular young-adult fiction author, his best-selling book is The Fault in Our Stars. He is also making this book into a movie and is coming out in the near future. If you like stories about smart and witty teens who are a little bit rebellious you will love this story. The setting of the story is modern day Indiana.

The Fault in Our Stars is the story of a 17 year old girl named Hazel that has thyroid cancer. She has to carry around an oxygen tank because her cancer has spread to her lungs. She has just started going to a children’s cancer support group where people talk about their struggles. She meets a guy named Augustus Waters. He is also 17 and had bone cancer. He is missing his left leg and he is now cancer free. He still goes to the meetings because of his friend Isaac. Isaac has a very rare eye cancer. At the beginning of the story Isaac has one eye that has already been removed because of the cancer and is worried about losing his other eye.

One day Augusts comes to support group and he and Hazel are immediately attracted to each-other. Even though he is cancer free, Gus is there to support Isaac because he is going to lose his other eye due to the cancer and be totally blind. After the meeting Gus invited Hazel to come over to Isaac’s house to hang out. After that Gus and Hazel begin a romantic relationship.

Hazel and Gus have a unique relationship because they are both very smart and rebellious. They talk about their experiences with cancer and cancer treatment. They talk about fait and whether or not life is fair. Hazel is obsessed with a book An Imperial Affliction. It is about a girl that dies of cancer. The book ends abruptly with the girl dying at the end, and the author does not resolve what happened to the rest of the characters in the story. Hazel desperately wants to know what happened to the characters, so she has written several letters to the author. She tells Gus about the book and how the author has never responded to her letters. After reading the book Gus decides to contact the author himself, and he receives an electronic response.

The rest of the story is a series of twists, turns, tragedies and wonderful lessons about life and what it means to be part of our world. “The real heroes anyways aren’t the people doing things; the real heroes are the people NOTICING things, paying attention” (Green 312). That is the theme of the story. In other words it’s ok to go through life and not be a world hero or accomplish huge things. It’s good enough to be a kind and thoughtful person.

Even though this book has a sad subject it makes you think about living life to the fullest every day. This was probably my favorite book I have read so far and I would really recommend this book. I will definitely read another one of his books in the near future. John Green is a great young-adult fiction author.

  1. I agree with the Jake Y. This book is about Hazel Grace and how she deals with her life and what she does even though she has cancer. Also how later she meets a guy named Augustus and she gets him interested in a book named An Imperial Affliction and they both talk about it and how he ends up contacting the author. So yeah this book has a lot of twists and turns to it, it's sad and all but it's a really good book for a sad story, it also makes you think a lot about life and how you live it.

  3. This review was great! I would like to read “The fault in our stars” by John Green because the way the reviewer put thing together made me want to read it. I also seen the movie but never read the book and I heard that the book was better. I think the person who wrote this review should get a 4 on their review because it's really good. Anyways, I will read this book when i finish the one I'm reading right now.
