With several interlocking story lines and dozens of fully
developed characters, The Stand by
Stephen King is a novel of truly epic proportions.
When an engineered disease named “Project Blue” and
nicknamed “Captain Tripps” accidentally escapes from a government research lab,
the world is thrown into turmoil. 99.4% of the world’s population perishes. The
few survivors, including Nick Andros, Frannie Goldsmith, and Stuart Redman,
dream of two distinct figures representing good and evil, the elderly mother
Abigail, and the sinister Dark Man.
With five main characters and several interlacing subplots The Stand can sometimes be difficult to
keep track of. This does not detract from the quality of the story however. The
writing is superb and all characters involved are well developed.
Due to it’s excellent plot, characters, and setting, The Stand is a must read for anyone who
enjoys horror or post-apocalyptic fiction. I highly recommend it.
