By Arthur C. Clarke
This author has also written 2010, and 3001, in the space
odyssey series. The basic theme of this story is that there are people in the
future (this book was written shortly after the first lunar landing, so 2001 was
the distant future) who explore space.
This book is told from the points of view of 3 people. The
first few chapters are told from a caveman’s point of view. The chapters after
that are told from a man on the moon’s point of view, and the last chapters
(and most of the book) are told from David Bowman’s point of view. The second
man is taken to the moon to be shown a top-secret thing that would have the
people in panic if they found out about it. The third man, David Bowman, is on
a space ship traveling in space toward Saturn. His mission has to do with the
thing found on the moon. On his journey, David will discover space he does not
plan to go to, and experience mysterious forces that do things not thought to
be possible.
I loved this book because it shows creativity in the field
of space travel and opens up new ideas for those who understand. I would
recommend that anybody who likes science-fiction, or just plain good
literature, should read this book immediately, and read its unexpected plot
twists and unpredictable ending.
