Food, Girls, and Other Things I Can't Have

The book “Food, Girls, And Other Things I Can’t Have”  by Allen Zadoff is an excellent read. Andy is a average high school teen just trying to make it through the day, except for the fact that his weight is a pressing issue in many fields. One day, he is saved from a beating by school quarterback O. With only geeks for friends, Andy tries out for the football team. But can he really trust the long time players? This isn’t Allen’s first novel so he really gets reader’s hooked in with this one. If you think this book is good, then you should check out some of his other work such as “Boy Nobody”.

Andy is a normal Sophomore in Newton high, except that he’s fat. Like 378 pounds fat. He only has one real friend, Eytan who is a Model UN geek and is all about the ladies. Andy finds himself not fitting anyplace really in school, until one day O. Douglass, Quarterback on the football team stands up for him. He then joins the football team where he becomes their new center. Finally for once in his life Andy fits someplace. Or does he? Rumor has it that there’s an enemy center who’s just as daunting as Andy. Does he still really fit on the team? The theme in this book is don’t be pushed around and don’t do stupid things to look cool. Andy did, and he almost lost a great friend.

In my opinion, “Food Girls, And Other Things I Can’t Have” is an excellent book. While reading, it is obvious to tell that it was written by a real person. It’s honesty in the meanness, and also the quirks of high school make it very easy to not stop reading. Although ANdy doesn’t always make the smartest decisions, he can view things from both ends of the spectrum, making him a great character. “Food, Girls, And Other Things I Can’t Have” is available for purchase on Amazon for $7.52. Have fun.
