Deep Down Popular

The book I read was Deep Down Popular by Phoebe Stone. She is a great author who really knows how to paint a picture within her writing. She has written many other novels such as The Boy on Cinnamon Street, The Romeo and Juliet Code, All the Blue Moons at the Wallace Hotel, and many others!  In this story, there is a boy named Conrad Parker Smith who was the most popular boy in the small southern town. Jessie Lou Ferguson is just a girl who admired him from afar.

Conrad was the star of the soccer team but he happens to hurt his leg bad enough to have to walk around in a big metal leg brace for a couple months. Jessie Lou is assigned to help Conrad walk his bike and books home one day after school and Jessie just sees this as the worst thing that could have ever happened to her. When Conrad is put in the leg brace, which is really the moment that his popularity plummets and he starts to lose all of his friends. Throughout the whole story all you really ever wonder is will somebody like Jessie Lou who is a tom-boy poet with a deep southern heart, ever be able to be true friends with someone that used to be as popular as Conrad Parker Smith.

I would recommend reading this book. Phoebe Stone paints such a great picture through her writing that it makes you feel like you are just spending some time in the south with Jessie Lou, Her sister, mother, and the man she loves more than anyone else her grandfather.  There are funny parts in the story along with heart-warming passages. If you like stories about first love or even just a cute, deep down crush, this is the story for you.
