“Three Days” is an excellent book from author Donna Jo
Napoli. Jackie is on a business trip with her dad in Italy, but when her dad
collapses at the wheel, two men come to pick her up, and take her back to their
house! With the bits of italian she learns Jackie is able to communicate with
Claudia, a friend seemingly at the house. But will she be able to excape?
Although intended for middle schoolers, this book will have readers of all ages
wondering what happens next. Donna has written many book for both young
children and young adults alike such as Daughter of Venice, Spinners, and On Guard.
Jackie is in Italy with her father on a business trip. While
they’re there, they want to have a good time too. So they visit local
restaurants and take in the sights. However, one night on their way back to
their hotel, Jackie’s father collapses at the wheel. Although Jackie screams
for help, no one is stopping. Finally, two men come and appear to want to help
her, but instead of taking her father to the hospital, they take only her and
return to their home. What will happen to Jackie as she deals with being
kidnapped? The theme in this book is confusion as Jackie goes through a lot in
the course of her troubles. It shows that you have to rely on what you know and
adapt in confusing situations. Although that sounds strange, Jackie, a girl
from Minnesota, is kidnapped by a family
who only speaks italian. She has to learn to communicate with Claudia, her one
friend there in hope of someday finding a way out.
In my opinion, “Three Days” is an excellent, though quick,
read for all ages. Very well written, this book will have readers feeling for
Jackie and wondering is this could happen to them. While reading this book,
readers will find the characters so relatable that however far fetched the
circumstance is, it’s believable every time. Napoli really knows how to capture
the essence of an 11 year old girls. This story would be completely different
if told from a different age. It is available on Amazon for $5.39. Enjoy.
