This book takes place in a modern day and the whole book is
placed over a span of about a month. The characters are two elementary students
named Cass and Max Ernest. They’re both very lonely and socially awkward. Max
is a jokester and Cass is an environmental survivalist. They are both intelligent
and have a lot of the same opinions about other people and things. The story take
place in some-what large city, and the base of the story is for Max and Cass to
find out about the mysterious disappearance of a magician. The author of the
story is Pseudonymous Bosch. This is the first of a series.
Cass and Max are both awkward and have trouble making
friends, until one day Cass finds herself thinking the school was built over a
toxic waste land and it could explode or poison everyone at any minute. Max
then walks over and tries to tell her a “joke” that wasn’t very funny. They had
started to talk when they noticed a box on the ground labeled “symphony of
smells”, so they opened it. There were vials in the case that all smelled like
relatable things in their everyday lives and there was a puzzle inside the case
that they had to solve. They ended up finally solving the puzzle leading them to
an old address of a dead magician. They then made plans to hangout on the
weekend and go to the address. When they arrived at the house, they snuck in
and found a secret underground elevator that takes them to the real house of
the magician.
From there, they find a secret journal, but soon after
trouble finds them and chases them for the journal. After this has happened,
they go through many more troubles to find out why those people wanted the
journal, who those people were and how it relates to the magician. They could
be on to a very important case and might also save a life at the same time.
I did like the story and it did get kind of tricky a points.
I wish it were a little clearer. I also really like the author’s writing style;
he really intertwines the reader to the protagonist and to the antagonist.
Overall, I loved the book and I plan on reading the sequels. I hope you will give
the book a chance!
