Twilight

The book I read is called Twilight. Its the first book out of the whole Twilight series, were there are 4 books. Its by the author Stephenie Meyer, who is the author of other books not just the Twilight series. This book is more of action and romance since a lot happens in it and it gets intense also and its about a girl and boy who meet and there lifes changes..

This book is about a girl named Bella Swan who is different from other girls and moves from Phoenix, Arizona to Forks, Washington to live with her dad. When she starts school she makes friends quickly, on her first day she meets a strange guy who’s named Edward Cullen who starts acting weird when she first arrives. Things start to get t stranger a couple days later, Bella starts to notice things mostly about Edward, the more she gets closer to him the more she starts falling for him and so does he for her. But she also starts to get more closer to the secret that Edward is hiding from her.  Now Bella  will have a whole twist in her life.

I think that this is a good book, and that others who get to read it will get to like it too. I recommend it to others more to those who like things   that have to do with romance and mystery too. Because this book has to do with mystery and a lot of romance and there are vampires involved to. When i first started reading it, i liked it and just wanted to keep on reading it, because you want to know what happens next so it captures you. In my opinion i think its a good book, and i also think others would like it to

Hell Phone

The book I read is called Hell Phone. The author of this book is William Sleator. William Sleator is also the author of another thrilling book called The Boy Who Couldn’t Die. Many of his books are heart-pumping creepy horror stories.  This author is a great choice when it comes to science fiction and thrillers. The theme of this book would be make risks even if you don’t know what the outcome of  situation will be.

Nick buys a used cell phone to call his girlfriend Jen. Soon he starts to get creepy calls from strange people. Nick is curious and decides to help the people call from the other end of the phone, but this move ends up in a huge mess.  Nick finds himself stealing, and lying all because of the phones devilish games and the people who are calling him. Nick finds out that there is a woman named Lola and a guy named Rusty is trying to kill her. Nick helps her, but that leads to his consequence of death. Now Nick must face real living hell and use his knowledge from the phones games to escape. The quote from this novel which I found the most interesting was "you killed him! “It clearly stated what the main character had done. Nick seemed so innocent; it was hard to believe that he killed somebody.

I enjoyed this book a lot because of its creepy plot. I hate when books take forever to get into the story, but this isn't the case with Hell Phone. I couldn't put it down! I especially like how the author used nicks weakness in the beginning of the book to make a very suspenseful ending. Nick became stronger and changed by doing what his instincts told him to so he could free himself. Wiliam Sleator did an amazing job describing the details and made the story and characters come to life. This book is definitely a book I would recommend only  if you want a thrilling and creepy read.

The Big Field

The book I read was “The Big Field” by Mike Lupica. Mike Lupica writes many sports books and “The Big Field” is as I would say a “Middle of the Road” book, which means that it isn’t outstanding but it is intriguing to a baseball fanatic like me. “The Big Field” is about a boy named Hutch. Hutch is a shortstop on the Cardinals, he is supposed to be the leader of the team but when a boy named Darryl joins the team Hutch’s position changes to 2nd base. To Hutch, switching to 2nd base is a demotion. Darryl is said to be the best baseball player in the state and will go pro when he is older. Hutch has to overcome the demotion and play to the best of his ability in order to have a future in the sport. This book seems to always have the same theme throughout the book and that would be “Overcoming obstacles”. In this book Hutch first has to face the switch of positions but he faces much more than that such as his dad. Hutch’s dad almost went pro in baseball but will not show up to any of Hutch’s games or even talk to him about baseball. Overcoming obstacles is pretty much what life is about, you have to face things that you wouldn’t want to but in order to proceed in life you have to put in the work.

In “The Big Field” Hutch has to perform at 2nd base even though his position is Shortstop. During this book Hutches team has to compete in a big tournament played at a Major League baseball field and will be played on Sportscenter. Hutch has to overcome the obstacle of playing on the same field as Darryl who is cocky and believes that everyone is below him. Hutch and Darryl have to come together and play as one in order to win the tournament. The team will need to play as more than a team, more like a family to go all the way. “If you were a shortstop, you always wanted the ball hit at you” (Lupica 78). This quote is intriguing to me because it shows the views of a shortstop and that no shortstop has a fear of the ball which is true because in order to play that position you cannot be scared of anything.

I loved the book because I am a baseball fanatic and I live for the game. The book never bores me and if I could I would read it 1000 times over. This book has a very good story line and teaches many lessons that can be applied to sports and life. Everyone should read this book if they like any sport and are looking for an exciting sports book.

The Colorado Kid

The book The Colorado Kid is by Stephen King. This book is about two kids finding a dead body on a beach during their morning run. It is up to a pair of old reporters and their intern to crack the code and find out who the he really is. This book is for those who enjoy a good mystery and who enjoy Stephen Kings writing. The Shining, The Stand, Carrie, and the running man are some of his many other books.

On April 24, 1980, two teenagers came across a body. Slumped against a trash can, and carrying no ID, the body showed no clear indicators of foul play. Cause of death was determined to be asphyxiation. Every potential clue leads to small revelations, but bigger mysteries. Though the investigation is head scratching everything seems inexplicable, from how the fish-dinner stomach contents could line up with his ferry boat crossing, to the single Russian coin in his pocket. More than a year later, thanks to a sharp-eyed rookie spotting an out-of-state cigarette tax stamp, the John Doe becomes known as The Colorado Kid. Eventually the man's identity is traced, and he is identified as James Cogan of Nederland, Colorado. Everyone involved with the Case is at loss was this murder? And if so who killed James Cogan?

I enjoyed this book. For anybody who enjoys Stephen king will also enjoy it. The only problem I have with it is the way the characters speak. They all have that odd way of talking, other than a few times I have had to reread sentences to make sense of a situation I love the book. It is a great way tag along with a police investigation without even having to leave the comfort of your own home. There is no better way to find out how James Cogan ended up on the beach, than read the book.

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan is a novel based on two Chinese girls who find a way to communicate to each other. This would be strange if they weren’t forbidden to talk to one another about their lives.  China lives in a patriarchy, so the women are forced to behave in certain ways in marriage, in their private lives, and even endure outdated procedures, like foot binding, to make them more feminine. Because of this patriarchy, the two girls are not allowed to speak, as mandated by the men in their lives.  Lisa See has numerous novels, some being: Shanghai Girls, Dreams of Joy, and many more. Her books bring the reader into an old village and make them feel as if they are right there, living their life with them. See uses beautiful and quaint diction as she conveys the consequences of living in a time that is dominated completely by men.

I enjoyed reading this story and I highly recommend it. I think it would make an excellent selection for young teenage females. They will learn about: Chinese culture (past and present); mother-daughter relationships; foot-binding; arranged marriage; female relationships; Chinese history; Chinese foods; Chinese geography, and much more.

A Thousand Splendid Suns

A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini, a firsthand look at the struggles occurring in every day Afghanistan, everything from fatality to arranged marriages this book keeps the reader at the edge of their seat. Hosseini has never failed to impress with his works, And the Mountains Echoed and Kite Runner have both been very successful. Both, like A Thousand Splendid Suns, have an Afghani background and universal theme that seems to circulate throughout Hosseini’s works. Our brutally scarred characters each have their own story to tell, each one as unique as the next; Mariam, a betrayed daughter and Laila, a simple minded girl who has her innocence stolen from her. This tragedy filled book is one built for the ages, something every devoted reader needs in their personal library. The theme of this book could be one of many things, for instance, if need be, it could be related to women in an obvious way. The discrimination of women or the inner strength of women are two very powerful themes in this book. But, if the author wanted a universal theme for all three of his books, my all-time favorite would be the human capacity for evil.

A Thousand Splendid Suns is a novel that illustrates the plight of women in Afghanistan.  In the beginning of this book the author introduces Mariam and her mother, a woman who is bitter because of Jalil, a man who impregnated her and left her and baby Mariam by themselves in a kolba outside of Kabul. She always lectured to Mariam, talked about “our lot in life” the lot of the poor, uneducated “woman like us”. Until the unfortunate death of Mariam’s mother, Mariam never appreciated her words, never fully understood them. Now, being alone Mariam was forced to marry. Rasheed was a big bloke of a man, rude and was always “embarrassed when he saw a man who can’t take control of his wife”. Rasheed forces Mariam to wear a burqa and treats her like she is the scum of the earth, even though Mariam lives and breathes to serve him. She lives in fear because of “his shifting moods, his volatile temperament, his insistence on steering even mundane exchanges down a confrontational path that, on occasion, he would resolve with punches, slaps, kicks, and sometimes try to make amends for with polluted apologies and sometimes not.” She never knew better, always assumed that, that was how women were supposed to be treated when it came to marriage in Afghanistan. The novel jumps back and forth between Mariam and Laila. Laila was the daughter of a school teacher in Kabul, a man who only wanted the best for his cherished little daughter. She praised him and his teachings, and all he wanted for her was an education. Her innocence and simple life was torn apart from her when a rocket that the Soviets had placed during war time in Afghanistan struck her house in Kabul and killed her parents. Her boyfriend Tariq, who she was irrevocably in love with, had already moved to Pakistan with his family in the hopes of a better life. She soon realizes that she is an orphan with no friends and no Tariq. Later on the reader finds out that Laila is also pregnant with Tariq’s baby and has nowhere to go, she and her baby would be alone on the streets of Kabul; and that’s when Laila decides to marry Rasheed. At first, Mariam sees Laila as a rival, after all, Mariam does live and breathe to serve Rasheed and he brings home another, making her feel once again, not good enough. Then, as the story progresses and baby Aziza is born, Mariam and Laila become allies in the oncoming war that is Rasheed. They shield each other from his anger and ridiculous demands and soon enough, even become best friends.

A Thousand Splendid Suns is a book I highly recommend to anyone who has or has not read either one of Hosseini’s other novels, it catches glimpses of war time Afghanistan and makes the story come alive by including ethos, logos and pathos throughout the whole book. This is a book that once picked up, can’t be put down. A 5 out of 5 star rating in my personal opinion, grab a copy and enjoy.

Merchant of Death

The book that I have finished reading is the Merchant of Death by D.J. MacHale. It is the first book in the Pendragon series and does a great job of introducing characters like Uncle Press a wise mentor for Bobby and Saint Dane the sadistic main antagonist of the book. Some of the other books he has written are Sylo, Storm, The Blood, The Black, and more. The book is mainly about Bobby and how he is trying to save his uncle and Denduron and all the territories like Earth, Cloral, and first Earth. The theme is determination because there are many times Bobby wants to give up but was determined to save his uncle and the people of Denduron.

This book is about Bobby Pendragon who has perfect life because he gets girls, is athletic, smart, and has a rich and cool family. One night when he is getting ready for his basketball game his uncle takes him to an abandoned subway station where they go through a portal and enter the territory of Denduron. Their main goal is to stop Saint Dane from starting a war between the Milago and Kagans knights. Over the course of the book they meet interesting warriors like Osa and Loor who are strong warriors and natives of Denduron. There are many twists and turns that kept me interested the whole time I spent reading this book.

I would recommend that more people read this book and the rest of this series because if the other books are as good as this one then I plan to read them all. The reason I liked this book so much is because it has a great plot, interesting setting, and very well developed characters that change throughout the like how Bobby was a coward but developed courage by the end. These are the reasons why I like the book and I think everyone should give this book a shot.

The Lightning Thief

The book that I have read for this book review is TheLightning Thief by Rick Riordan. I thought the book was pretty good and was not too hard of a read. I mostly enjoyed it throughout the book and it was a pretty nice diversion. There are some things about it I liked and did not like however.

The book starts out with a boy named Percy who has dyslexia and ADHD. During a field trip with his class, Percy is attacked by his math teacher, who turns out to be a harpy. Unexpectedly, Percy's Latin teacher throws him a pen that turns into a sword. Percy defeats his math teacher and Percy's Latin teacher, who is actually the centaur, Chiron, takes him to a place called Camp Half blood. At this point it is revealed that Percy is a demi god, which is a half god half human. He goes to camp and is accused of stealing Zeus' lightning bolt. Percy then has to set out on a journey to find Zeus' lightning bolt.

Overall I thought the book was good. I would definitely recommend it to someone else. I actually kind of think that this book has a certain kind of group it would appeal to. I say check the book out and if you don't like the first book do not continue to read the series.

Life of Pi

The book I recently finished reading is called, “Life ofPi”. Life of Pi is written by Yann Martel. Life of Pi is a book that was later turned into a major motion picture. Yann has made some other books like, “Self” and “Beatrice and Virgil”. Life of Pi was written in 2001 and is a very interesting book. This book takes a little while until it gets good but when it gets to the good part, it is a really fun read. I haven’t read any of Martel’s other books so I don’t know how they compare to this book. The major theme of this wonderful book is to never lose hope or give up. This is probably the theme because throughout the whole part of the book that Pi is stuck on the boat with the 450-pound Royal Bengal Tiger, he tries his hardest to not lose hope and in the end, it pays off because he finally finds land. The reason why I picked this theme is because I think it occurs throughout basically the whole book. Most of the book is Pi on the lifeboat struggling to stay alive. Pi overcame the challenge of surviving because he never gave up and it was able to pay off. This book is about a young man named Pi that moves from India. His parents owned a zoo back in India and they were on a boat that was transporting all of them. During the voyage, there was a powerful storm that made the boat sink and all of the animals went overboard. Pi was lucky enough to be able to get on a lifeboat safely, but did not make it to the lifeboat alone.

In the beginning of the book, Pi goes on a voyage with his family and all of the animals that were at his parent’s zoo. Before the boat capsizes from the storm, Pi gets into a lifeboat with a few other animals. The animals that made it onto the lifeboat with Pi were a hyena, a wounded zebra, an orangutan, and the tiger named Richard Parker. Throughout the boat ride on the lifeboat, the hyena takes advantage of the wounded zebra and kills it, later the hyena also kills the orangutan and then finally the tiger kills the hyena. Pi and the tiger go on a wild adventure and spent many days together on the lifeboat. Their adventure ends when they finally find land and Pi is saved.

One quote that stuck out to me is, “My feelings can perhaps be imagined, but they can hardly be described” (Martel 142). This quote interested me because I like how it is written and what it means. A lot of people have trouble explaining their feelings, especially if somebody has a really hard life. I just really like this quote because it is true to a lot of people. The second quote that stuck out to me is, “Very few castaways can claim to have survived so long at sea as Mr. Patel, and none in the company of an adult Bengal tiger” (Martel 319). I found this quote interesting because it is the final line in the book and it is just as interesting.  Pi is proud to have survived being lost at sea with a tiger in the same little boat as he was, and made it out alive.

I really liked this book when it got going. This book was boring in the beginning because it was slow but when it started getting interesting when he got on the boat, I didn’t want to stop reading because I always wanted to know what would happen next on the lifeboat. I also like how this book is written. I like how it is written because it is just in interesting read and it isn’t an extremely easy book to read but it isn’t too hard either. It is slow in the beginning because it is just mainly talking and no action. I would definitely recommend this book to whoever doesn’t mind reading through a slow and boring beginning to get to the really interesting part. Others should read this book because it is a fun read and just overall an interesting book.

Half-Moon Investigations

The book Half-Moon Investigations, by Eoin Colfer, has a really interesting story. I have not read anything else by him, but I am sure that they are as good, if not better than this book. Fletcher Moon (the main character), is a great detective. When he gets into a little trouble with the law, his whole life changes.

While working on a case, Fletcher gets in trouble with the law. He is forced to change everything about his life. His appearance drastically changes, and the detective has to throw his values away. He has to join a family of criminals. This throws him off completely, because usually he is the one who they hate. It has a dramatic ending, and all ends well.

I recommend this book to everyone who likes mystery books. It as so many twists and turns, it will catch you completely off guard. Read this book, you will not regret it. I loved it and I hope you will too.

The Official Chuck Norris Fact Book

The Chuck Norris Fact Book was written by the amazing fighter, author, and actor Chuck Norris himself.

Chuck Norris who fought for our country and is one of the best fighters in the world tells us all of his adventures and experiences about his life in The Chuck Norris Fact Book. This book even includes some facts that only himself and his family only knew about like how he had learned ju-jitsu while he was serving our country. But some of the facts are jokes like “Outer space exists because it’s afraid to be on the same planet as Chuck Norris”. The book even includes some sad things about his life. One sad thing is his younger brother Wieland was also a veteran for our country and unfortunately he had been killed while he was in Vietnam.

This awesome, cool, and interesting book is very amusing to many people and it’s an autobiography and also has some jokes that make the book even better. The book had caught my eye when I was searching for a book the cover is so creative and different from other books. The book is filled with the ups and downs of his life and even includes tips and life lessons which are very useful. Many people may think that the book is non-sense but his book is filled with experiences that are similar to other people which makes this book relatable. Chuck Norris may seem very scary because he is a fighter but he is actually humble, gentle, and a very calm person.

If you want to read about Chuck Norris’ epic adventures you can find the book online on the link below. You can get itfor just $4.00 online on Ebay!

Empty

The title of this book is empty. The author is K.M. Walton. This book one novel. The author has made other books but they are each there one story and problems. This book is the only one I have read from the author. I really enjoyed this story. This book deals with situations that actually happen in life and how people handle them.

Dells life is filled with disappointment ever since her dad left her awhile back. Dell takes in all the mean comments she gets from her classmates and just to hide from the pain she makes jokes about herself so others can't make fun of her first!

Everyone wants to fit into the popular group. When Dells only friend finds out that she fits in perfectly with the popular she starts to leave Dell slowly because she realizes Dell will never fit in no matter how much she tries to help. When this happens Dell doesn't know what to do anymore. She doesn't have any friends or family left to turn to. Her depression and pain keeps getting worse and worse till she cant control it anymore.

Overall this book is about a girl whose world turns backwards when her dad leaves the family. She goes into depressions and can't get out. This is a very shocking story but it was worth reading. It deals with the cruel part of the world and how kids can be evil to one another. If you're a person who likes reading stories about the sad realistic problems some kids deal with then this is the book for you. The author did great with making this as realistic as possible and each character had an interesting part.

The Outsiders

The book i read was The outsiders by s.e Hinton. This book is one of many books she has written that all have to do with teenage issues and they're all basically set in the 80s to 90s era. This particular book is set around the late 80s or mid 90s in a town split between east and west side .Its maybe mid way through summer and there is a brewing issue between two groups at this time in the book. The main point in this book is you don't know what you have until it's gone and that a normal situation can turn into something a lot different.

there are several main characters in this story so ill just list them for you. First of theres Ponyboy the youngest of the greasers basically the narrator of this whole story. Hes also the most interested in academics and school work than the rest of his friends which makes him the most different. Then theres Darell Ponyboys oldest brother and the parent figure in this story because he has to take care of ponyboy since their parents died in a car crash. Also there's soda pop the second oldest of ponyboys brothers and the better looking one in the family who is envied by the other greasers. Finally theres Johnny the 16 year old best friend of ponyboy who goes through many challenges with ponyboy throughout the whole story. The story is about two groups of people the greasers and the sochs. Greasers are the more hood and poor side of the town but there also the stronger type. Socks are the more preppy and rich side who are more for looks and money than anything else. They are on ongoing battles throughout the story and they get into some very hairy situations in the story. It all ends in a big rumble between the sides with a shocking outcome that you wouldn't believe even if i told you.

The book was very interesting and it was one of the very small amount of books that i've read that i liked. It started of slowly but towards the middle it progressed into a very good cliff hanging book with changes at every turn. Its also a very good book to be inspired by because of the story that it tells and what message it's trying to send to the reader. If you enjoy books that leave you there speechless and unable to comprehend what you are reading than this is a good book for you so go and check it out.

Book Review by Leighton H.

The Name of This Book is Secret

This book takes place in a modern day and the whole book is placed over a span of about a month. The characters are two elementary students named Cass and Max Ernest. They’re both very lonely and socially awkward. Max is a jokester and Cass is an environmental survivalist. They are both intelligent and have a lot of the same opinions about other people and things. The story take place in some-what large city, and the base of the story is for Max and Cass to find out about the mysterious disappearance of a magician. The author of the story is Pseudonymous Bosch. This is the first of a series.

Cass and Max are both awkward and have trouble making friends, until one day Cass finds herself thinking the school was built over a toxic waste land and it could explode or poison everyone at any minute. Max then walks over and tries to tell her a “joke” that wasn’t very funny. They had started to talk when they noticed a box on the ground labeled “symphony of smells”, so they opened it. There were vials in the case that all smelled like relatable things in their everyday lives and there was a puzzle inside the case that they had to solve. They ended up finally solving the puzzle leading them to an old address of a dead magician. They then made plans to hangout on the weekend and go to the address. When they arrived at the house, they snuck in and found a secret underground elevator that takes them to the real house of the magician.

From there, they find a secret journal, but soon after trouble finds them and chases them for the journal. After this has happened, they go through many more troubles to find out why those people wanted the journal, who those people were and how it relates to the magician. They could be on to a very important case and might also save a life at the same time.

I did like the story and it did get kind of tricky a points. I wish it were a little clearer. I also really like the author’s writing style; he really intertwines the reader to the protagonist and to the antagonist. Overall, I loved the book and I plan on reading the sequels. I hope you will give the book a chance!

Unless these four kids can stop Mr. Curtin (the master mind) the world will change forever. Throughout this process the kids are not only saving the world they also find who they are, their purpose in life, and finally where they belong.

Throughout reading it I could hardly put the book down this novel has the perfect mixture of suspense, mystery and originality there is never a dull moment. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading mysteries or thrillers.

Book Review by Hanna W.

The Hunger Games

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is a Novel that will keep you at the edge of your seat. Suzanne Collins has written other novels as well, but is mainly known for writing the hunger games. Also included in theHunger Games series is Mocking Jay, and Catching Fire. The book takes place in the future, where the world is split into districts. The districts are sort of like countries, but you’re not allowed to leave the district you are assigned to. Each district is given a responsibility they are to obtain, such as providing coal. The Capital is the president of all the districts, and every year for his own enjoyment, he hosts the Hunger Games where the leader of your district picks two people from each their own district, or “tributes” that will compete. The Capital does this to witness the weaknesses of each district. At the end of the Hunger Games there is only one survivor. I believe this book is surrounded with the theme survival. I say survival, because everyone wants to live, but they can’t with the little food supply provided in district twelve. Katniss cares about her family, and knows they cannot survive without her. Katniss strives to live when she hunts for food. When she competes in the Hunger Games she does anything she can to survive, because she knows that her family needs her, and that is her main priority.

Katniss Everdeen grew up in District twelve with her mother, father, and sister. Katniss loved to hunt with her father. Her father would teach her new hunting tricks every day. Katniss’s father passed away when she was quite young, and from that point on her mother was so in shock that she could not even take care of herself. So Katniss stepped in to care of her younger sister, Prim. The day of the reaping, the day the district leaders and people of the World find out who will be representing District Twelve in the Hunger Games, Katniss’s sister got chosen to compete. Katniss knew that her sister did not have a high chance of winning the Hunger Games, which would mean death for her sister. Katniss could not accept that so she volunteered as tribute. From that point on Katniss and Peeta, the other main character who will be competing with Katniss, prepare for the Hunger Games, and whether they do or do not win, prepare to fight strong.

I would defiantly recommend this book to others, it is a great read! It will leave you on the edge of your seat with the dramatic events that occur making you want to read more. Such as when Prim gets chosen to compete, and Katniss volunteers. Prim is so young, and does not know a thing about hunting! She would be gone within the first hour of the Hunger Games! I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a good thrill or dram to read, because I am sure this book will satisfy.

We Are So Crashing Your Bar Mitzvah

The book “We are so Crashing your Bar Mitzvah” is a book by Fiona Rosenbloom. This book is her first and only book. The theme of this book is that your true friends might be standing in front of your face the whole time. This book shows how most teens go there just to be popular and to fit in, and not think of friends and other people around them, and telling a lie would ruin everything for you, your friendship, and relationship.

We are Crashing your Bar Mitzvah” is about a girl name Stacy. She just had summer at a camp with her Best Lydia and a girl named Laila that showed them lots of interesting things about high school and other cool things. When they came back from summer break it was a matter of days to start high school. They thought that staying the old same way like in middle will help them get through high school to fit in and get popular. They wanted to see their other best friend named Kelly that went to a state for the summer. But when they try to call her on the phone, she doesn’t pick up. They begin to worry because the high school recognition was going to start in 1 hour. With no time to waste, they decided to put on their rock star shirt and ripped jeans for the traditional first night for school. Stacy decided to call Kelly before they leave for the party, still no answer. They left with a bag of clothes for Kelly to wear. Stacy and Lydia took their bikes and bicycled down to street to where the party is. But when they got there was no bikes and they tossed the bike and act like its not there's. They walked towards a grassy area and later they would find a crowd of people. Stacy and Lydia ran towards the crowd and found the party. They were relieved and they started to look around for Kelly and the most annoying group called the Chicas. The leader, Kym was the bully in middle school, Stacy and Lydia wanted to see how much they changed. After a few minutes Lydia noticed Kelly. Lydia was surprised to find Kelly completely different, she hasn't gained weight, beautiful hair, no braces, and white teeth. Stacy and Lydia was shocked to find their best friend to change completely after 3 months. When they approached her they noticed that the Chicas were with her. They didn’t get why they were, but they ignored it and talked to Kelly. Then after they caught up on things, everyone was happy when a limousine appeared. A boy named Eben and his friend Oscar came out of the limousine. Everyone came up to them and and waited for what they would say. Eben held out a silver tray and gave Kym a necklace. An invitation for the Bar Mitzvah. Stacy was excited for it so was Lydia. When Eben was in front of them, he turned to Kym and when he does, she gives a tiny shake from side-to-side. Stacy and Lydia couldn’t believe it, leaving Oliver confused. When Eben was in front of Kelly he did the same thing, but this time Kelly smiled so Eben motioned for Oliver to come with the try and placed a necklace on Kelly. When Eben left saying, “we will be seeing you at the Oscar’s!” and went back to the limousine with Oliver. The Chicas gathered around Kelly and taking pictures and saying that they were going to the Bar Mitzvah together. Stacy and Lydia felt left out and just congratulate Kelly and the Chicas. When everyone left to go back home, Stacy thought of an idea to get Kelly not to go to the Bar Mitzvah. And if that plan didn’t work they would crash the party surprising the Chicas and Kelly.

If I were to give this book a rating, I would give it a 9 out of 10. Its based on many teenagers life and how bad they wanted to fit in. but in the end saying the right things and staying who you were are the most important things in life.

Picture Me Gone

Picture me gone is the book I read. The author of this book is Meg Rosoff. She has written other books such as, How I Live Now, Just InCase, What I Was, The Brides Farewell, Vamoose, There Is No Dog, and other books including picture books. This is the first book I have read by Rosoff. The book is about an interesting father daughter relationship. The theme of this book is trust. Mila’s father almost loses Mila when he does not tell her the complete truth.

This story is about a Father and Daughter who visit America from London. When they arrive the friend they were supposed to meet goes missing. Mila and her father go on a road trip to a cabin. When they reach the cabin they find an old friend named Lynda. Lynda has a son named Jake; Mila soon develops a crush on Jake. While figuring Jake and Lynda’s story Mila realizes that the story of his disappearing is more twisted than they thought. Through a couple days of investigating Mila figures out her father has a secret of his own.

Personally I found this book a little boring. I thought the plot would be more interesting with twists and turns. I predicted what was going to happen in the book. There weren’t too many conflicts besides the man being lost. If I could have chosen a different book to read I would. Save your time and pick a different book. I just don’t like the authors writing style. The book is not very descriptive and it was hard to imagine.

The Hobbit

The title of the book I read was The Hobbit. The author of The Hobbit is J.R.R Tolkien. J.R.R Tolkien has written many other books including The Lord of the Rings saga and The Silmarillion. The Hobbit is as well the prequel to The Lord of the Rings saga. This book is about a group of dwarves who go on a journey to take back their home land, with a little help from a powerful wizard and a little hobbit. The theme of this story is never give up on each other because if they hope of completing this journey then they are not able to give each other up.

This story is about a little hobbit who gets asked to go on an adventure, which hobbits are not known to do and it is very much looked down upon by other hobbits. The main important characters in this story are Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf, Thorin, Balin, Bifur, Bofur, Bombur, Dori, Dwalin, Fili, Gloin, Kili, Nori, Oin and Ori. Some of the Non-important conflicts include trying to escape globins, defeating orcs, and of course getting along with elves. “The Bagginses have lived in the neighborhood of the hill for time out of mind, and people considered them very respectable, not only because most of them rich, but also because they never had any adventures or did anything unexpected”(Tolkien 11).

I extremely liked this book because I enjoy reading and watching media that has a lot of action and this book really delivered from the action with orcs, goblins, and a dragon. I think that if you like fantasy or action books then you should read this book immediately and I think that anyone of all ages would really like this book.

True love, or to rebel and break all of the rules to choose who she wants to love. “ but we do find answers in beauty, more often than not” (Condie 507).

I recommend this book to everyone. This intriguing trilogy leaves you wanting more with each chapter. It leaves you asking questions like, do I really know who I love? The Complete Tales of Edgar Allen Poe

The Complete Tales of Edgar Allen Poe is by far one of the greatest books I have ever read. I love his style of poetry, and the way his short stories all have an eerie oddity about them. This book is a compilation of his writings, and it was easy to just open the colossal book to any page, and choose something to read, then go back to the table of contents and check off each entry as you read it. I found myself spending more time than usual voluntarily reading, under the spell of the master of suspense. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interesting in scary movies, poetry, or classic literature. Edgar Allen Poe is my favorite writer, and it was a really good experience to learn so much about him through his writings, and just the style of his descriptions, portrayals, and plot lines.

Thirteen Reasons Why

By Jay Asher

Hannah’s death was a surprise to everyone. Why did she kill herself? Everyone asked but no one knew the true reason until listening to the thirteen tapes. Before Hannah died she seemed to have a normal life as a teenager. Nobody knew what she was really feeling or thinking until they began listening to the tapes.

Before Hannah killed herself she started recording herself explaining “the thirteen reasons why” she committed suicide. Each tape was about one person, they didn’t have names on them so you had to listen to all of them before realizing which was yours. All thirteen people will receive the tapes at some point but the rules were that you needed to pass them on.

This book is full of surprises that will make you want to read even more.

The name of the author is John Flanagan. He was born Australia and still lives there. He has written 12 books in the RangersApprentice series and is now writing the Brotherband Chronicles. His first book was a New York Times Best Seller.

When Gilan goes to till the king and the others walk back they find a group of Wargals (Morgarath’s army) and they decide to follow them and discover what Morgarath’s plan really is to the battle between him and the kingdom.

I recommend this book because of the author, because he is a great writer and describes everything in the scene. He also gets you loving all of the main characters in the book. Also this is a great series that millions of others have bought. And all the readers love the series and so will everyone else that does.

Alice in Wonderland

I read Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Caroll, it is a favorite among many. It is also known as a movie produced by Disney. However the movie and the book have distinct differences in some of the scenes. I have not read any other books by Lewis Caroll, but some of his other writings include; Through the Looking Glass and The Complete Stories and Poems

Alice in Wonderland is about a girl who falls through a rabbit hole when she is following a white rabbit and her curiosity gets the best of her. There in this "strange" land she runs into many troubles and unfamiliar faces. From having tea with the Mad Hatter and The Hare to getting stuck in the White Rabbits house and playing croquet with the Queen, this is something Alice will never forget.

After awhile however she grows quite tired of being in Wonderland and is eager to find a way home. As the book is drawing to a conclusion Alice is found in a position where she may die and never be sent home again. Later on we find out that It was all a dream when Alice actually becomes awake. Many people say there are deeper messages in the story that can be complicated to comprehend. Personally I enjoyed the story and I also liked the writing style of the author. My favorite part about the book is that too read it you really have to use your imagination. I would recommend this book, because if you've seen the movie and then read this there are many differences from the movie. Overall it was a good read.

Elijah of Buxton

Elijah of Buxton was written by Christopher Paul Curtis. This was one of Curtis's many novels. Elijah of Buxton won multiple awards such as the 2008 Corretta Scott King award, the 2008 Newbery honor, and the 2008 Scott Odell award for historical fiction. Throughout the novel young Elijah goes through many things and he begins to learn that as people who have been through struggles are affected in many ways.

Elijah or 'Lijah as many people in the settlement of Buxton call him is an eleven year old colored boy. Buxton is a settlement in Canada for slaves who have escaped slavery through the underground railroad. Elijah was the first born free child in that settlement. Elijah wants to appear grown up to the adults so he lets a man who is supposed to be a revenge deacon take him to a traveling carnival. At this carnival the reverend makes Elijah show off his unique talent of throwing rocks with great accuracy and nearly sells Elijah to the carnival. Later Elijah's neighbor Mrs. Holton received word that her husband who is still in slavery was beaten to death. So she gives the money she had saved up to buy get husbands freedom to Mr.Leroy so he can free his family. Mr. Leroy gives the money to the reverend to take to someone who could give it to his family, but the "holy" reverend steals the money and sneaks to America. Elijah then sees how distraught Mr.Leroy was and sneaks off to America to Get the money back from the reverend. When he finds the reverend he is dead hanging in a barn killed by white slave traders. Elijah finds the money. He also finds a baby and takes it to the safety of Buxton.

I would recommend this book for a number of reasons. One reason is that the author uses pretty in depth detail. Another reason why this book is good is that it's pretty realistic. A lot of what happens in the novel could have happened back in the slavery times. This book is really good and you should read it.

Going Bovine

Going Bovine is an amazing novel written by Libba Bray and it is now easily my favorite novel of all time! The plot follows a high school junior Cameron Smith who discovers that he has a life threatening disease. However, there is a chance that he can survive. All he has to do is help a pink haired punk angel save the universe. Thankfully, he doesn’t have to go at it alone. Tagging along is a gamer dwarf named Gonzo and a lawn gnome? At the end of this dark humored journey that very well be the mother of all road trips Cameron and maybe even you, reader will find that, what you’re looking for isn’t always what you need.

Cameron only wants one thing to coast through high school…and life. But then he starts hearing things and seeing thing that don’t make sense, things only he can see. After a while he is given the grave news he is sick and he is going to die. Just as he giving up on all the life he has left a pink haired punk angel girl tells him the reason he is sick is because he is being affected by dark matter. Now he has to go out find the dark matter send it back to where ever it came from and stop the universe from killing itself. On the way he recruits a sheltered nerdy gamer dwarf and a lawn gnome to help him save the world and himself.

I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone! This book has a dark sense of humor which to some is a little disturbing but that humor is what makes this book a top grade novel. Just go a little past that humor and it is promised that any reader will find a touching tale that may give you a better different perspective of life and yourself.

The Glory Field

I read the book Glory Field by Walter Dean Myers. This story starts with Muhammad Bilal on a slave ship in the late 1700's. Muhammad is eleven when he becomes a runaway slave he is captured when he is fighting a lion by slave catchers. The most disturbing part is that he was caught by people like him Africans. Then the story fast forwards about a hundred years to Lizzy Lewis this is where a majority of the story takes place.

Lizzy Lewis is a slave. She is a Lewis because as slaves they take the last name of their owners. She lives with Saran and Moses. Moses is Muhammads great grandson.  Moses has a brother named Joshua. Joshua is married to Neela even though they have different owners, they were married secretly, this kind of reminds me of Romeo and Juliet in some ways. Except they kept the marriage secret so that there children weren't separated. Lem Joshuas nephew has escaped also. Lem is captured and tied to a tree in the forest as bait. The slave catchers were hoping that Joshua would come too free Lem but instead Lizzy tries to bring him water and is caught. Lizzy is beaten in the forest by Joe Haynes the overseer and then Lizzy, Lem, and Joshua escape.Moses later shouts Oh Glory while on the land that is where this field got its name. Check out this book in your local library tho find out what happens in the lives of the descendants of Muhammad Bilal.

This was an okay book I enjoyed it. Out of 5 stars I give this story a 3. It is a very good story but I found it a little hard to follow because it jumps through time a lot. Other than that I enjoyed it and I enjoy other books by Walter Dean Myers such as Bad Boy and Monster which are also good reads.

The Rule of Three

The title of my story is the Rule of three. Rule of three has 405 pages. The authors name is  Eric Walters.  Another book he has written  is We all fall down. I have not yet been able read any of his other books. The theme of the story is realistic-fiction.

In that world , all electrical devices have shut down. There are no new cars moving, no air conditioning, no laptops or cell phones,  no big planes flying in the sky. Every thing has comes to a stop. Adam a  high school soon to be pilot has to survive other people  with some friends, his family, the girl he likes and that mysterious neighbor named Herb.

I would give these book five out of five stars. I gave this book this because the characters are very lifelike and the story draws you in hoping for a sequel. The author paints  very clear picture of what he describes.  I would recommend this book to anyone that likes post- apocalyptic stories or have read any of Eric Walters other books.

Passing

Some humans have the ability to shape-shift. Like a chameleon they can blend into their surrounding by changing their color to something that it isn’t. This is a phenomenon known as “passing” in which people of color who are light enough to pass for white, say that they are to receive the privilege (or lack of disadvantage) that comes along with being white. The book Passing, written by Nella Larsen, is a story about the intricacies of faith in those you love and your race, and explores what one woman will face when she’s forced to choose between the two.

Passing is set up like a play, with 3 acts in which the mixed-light-skinned protagonist, Irene Redfield, encounters her childhood friend, Clare Kendry, 3 times. Clare is also very light, but unlike Irene, she chooses to pass for white-ensuring a life of comfort and privilege, but with an underlying pulse of danger; the danger of being discovered. This book takes place in the late 20s in New York City and, although it is set in the north, racism is very obviously still a part of the characters’ lives. Irene’s relationship with her “white” friend is wrought with conflict and tension. When she discovers Clare is in danger as a result of betrayal (a term used interestingly frequently throughout the narrative) her race, Irene finds herself struggling between defending her heritage or her fellow man (so to speak). With her dignity and sanity carefully in the balance, Irene must explore what is most important to her, and how she relates to the world around her, asking herself: what is bravery and what is cowardice?

Passing is a poignant look at two women’s cultural struggles in a white dominated world, and how they choose to move past them. Full of intriguing plot twists, introspective internal monologue and complex characters, Passing gives the reader a look at black America in the 1920s, and new or improved perspective on race and privilege. For anyone who is struggling with their identity I any form, this is a book that will give you an array of characters to relate to and a myriad of conflicts to reflect on. It will open up the doors to personal reflection and give you the chance to ask yourself; what is most important to me, and what lengths would I go to to fight for it?

The Cocaine Kids: The Inside Story of a Teenage Drug Ring

The Cocaine Kids by Terry Williams

Terry Williams has written other books about drug circles and how they affect the people and the neighborhoods they are in. this is the only book I have read by him. I think the point of this book was to show that most people in the illegal drug trade are only doing it to get by and most of them are pretty young. The theme of the book was that things can always get better even when you hit rock bottom.

Cocaine Kids follows a group of kids in New York who sell crack and cocaine. In the book he tells about the different phases of the drug trade from the introduction of crack to fall of cocaine. The book also tells how and why they got into dealing drugs and what they have experienced and what their goals are afterward. Everyone in the book knows that they can’t deal forever and as they get older they experience more things that prove that dealing is a short term job.

I liked the book it puts a different perspective on something a lot of people know little about and may be one of the only books that does it. I would recommend this book to anyone it is just interesting. You start to get attached to the group and you feel sad when the book is over but you get happy that they all were able to get legitimate jobs and stop dealing drugs.
