American Street

American Street by Ibi Zoboi a timely coming of age novel. Ibi hasn’t written many books but she has wrote a book named “the life of a ice cream sandwich” which is generally for younger children. Ibi is a woman who is from Haiti just like her character in this book and may have went through most of the things her character did in the book. American Street is generally a book for young adults and the theme of this book is realism and fantasy. The character goes through a lot of tough situations in this book and has to deal With it mostly on her own. This book explores the problems of immigration and growing up and a young girl having to deal with making it through an emotional rollercoaster in a new place she’s never been before.

American Street is a book about a teenage girls who has immigrated from Haiti to live a new life in her new home ,Detroit with her three cousins after her mom is taken away by immigration and is stranded in New Jersey. Fabiola Toussaint is the main character in this book her and her mother always had dreamed of what America would be like and expect it to be “une belle vie” which means a beautiful life. Fabiola mother would tell her “this is the beginning of a new life” this line caught my attention because Fabiola was expecting to live a amazing life with her mom yet she can’t she has to give up speaking her language and has to stay with her strict aunt and crazy cousins.

I liked this book because it shows the problem with immigration and has lot a things going on that keep you excited there’s is never a boring chapter in this book which is what I prefer in a book. The authors shows the problem and good things of someone moving to a different country they’ve never been to a day in there life which is something that I would like to know about so that’s why I picked this book and why I think others would enjoy to read this because it addresses real problems. People should read this book immediately because it has a lot of things in it other that immigration that may be interesting to others it also may connect to some people if they’ve been through similar problems Fabiola has been through.
