Schooled

The book that I'm reading about is called schooled by an author named paul langan. Paul langan is 47 years old he wrote more than 20 books, and over 10 of the book was in the bluford high books such as the gun, the bully, survivor, and fallen in most of the bluford books the characters are connected in some way.

Lionel is a freshman in highschool he was 15 years old he loves to play basketball he hopes to play in the nba one day.  but there is a big problem he doesn't like school and he doesn't  know how to read he plays for his highschool “he’s very good but the teachers are trying to hold him back because of his bad grades”  his dad tells him it’s not worth his time and wants him to only finish school. His friends want him to stay with him and drop out of school.

I like the book because it's similar to a lot of teens, including me, we all have  a dream that seems good but we would need to go to school to do are dream jobs a lot of us think about dropping but won’t because we want to make are family happy and work are dream jobs. I think it's about teen because that's the things that go through are minds. More people should read this book because it tells you what to prepare for when you drop out it's not a good life on anybody.

In a nation segregated by race, we must stand together to make a change. ‘March Book One’ By John Lewis, Andrew Aydin, and Nate Powell is a graphic novels that tells a true story about the journey John Lewis made to help end Segregation in America. John lewis is a congressman who was a key member of the civil rights movement.

March is about the civil rights movement told through the eyes of John Lewis. After following the word of Martin Luther King Jr. and Jim Lawson, He decides he has to do more to bring equality to african Americans. Fighting against the law and other racist American, John lewis does whatever it takes to desegregate America. Following his role models Lewis decides non-violent is the only way to protest.

I really enjoyed reading March. March is a quick read with a great history lesson and a great message. If you are a fan of graphic novels this is a must read. This is an amazing book if you’re looking for a quick read or looking to broaden your mind about the civil rights movement.

Of Mice and Men

This book was written by John Steinbeck. He had also written plenty of other books such as The Pearl, The Grapes of Wrath, East of Eden and more. All the books have human lesson problems and achievements. The theme of the book is faith and loneliness because they’re all alone at one point but then end up depending on one another to have each other’s back.

The book starts out with two young men, Lennie and George who live in California during The Great Depression. Lennie and George dreamed of one day having a farm of their own, leading them to migrate elsewhere in California in search of land being for sale. While on the move Lennie and George find a farm where they are hiring workers. They settle down in order for them to save up for their own land. Lennie and George meet a worker named Candy, who they discuss their plans with, he offers $350 in order for him to have his own room. Lennie has mental disorder where he loves fluffy items. One day Lennie was in the stable, with the animals, Curleys wife shows up admitting how lonely he is. Curlys wife is aware of Lenny’s habit , letting him stroke her hair. This got Lennie into a lot of trouble which causes George to take matters into his own hands , doing what he believes is best for his friend.

I did like this book because the fact that two strangers can turn into best friends and have the best bond and mindset to get something. They put their mind into having their own farm and begin that business, it’s like what I want to do, is to begin a business of landscaping to have workers that can’t work because of not having social or identification. This book was written for the audience and readers out there that don’t believe in achieving their dreams and how you can actually accomplish them with having your mind on it. I feel like the reader will like it the fact that people that don’t know each other can have the perfect bond. I recommend on reading this book if you want to see what’s it's like to achieve a dream that you think you won’t ever get to. This book will help you change on how you see people and how you see things.

Silence

Silence by Natasha Preston

This book reminds me of me because, before her silence, she was getting bullied at school, didn’t really have any friends but her boy best friend that she knew since she was little. He was the only one she would talk to and love being around, and that was me at a time, only had a few people I talked to and love to hang with. But everyone knows that, during a certain time, all friendships and relationships don’t last a long time, even though yall been through alot with each other, you can’t trust everyone you call your friends. I was only close to like three people who I thought I could trust but they broke that and to this day, it’s hard to trust anyone anymore. I think in the book, she really can’t trust anyone because of the things she went through and just can’t put her trust into people anymore and that’s probably why she stopped talking.

I can relate to the main character because, she been going through the same similar things i was going through with some of the people who I thought I could call my friends/ best friends, be feeling like you don’t have nobody to turn to or talk too because you think they gonna judge you of what you gonna say. I feel her pain thought out the whole book, nobody wants to go to somewhere and everytime they turn around there's somebody talking, laughing, pointing, sharing like the haven’t seen a person before.

This book can relate to real life because, there are real kids out here who really be going through these things and be telling nobody about it and really be going through a lot by themselves. It’s not good for anybody to go through bullying or other things that’s outside of school, no child should go through anything like that at a young age. Bullying is the number one thing that’s a problem everywhere in the world, don’t matter what race, clothes, shoes, hair done or not, their will always be somebody or a person who’s always hating and have to say something about you, but it’s up to you if you believe in the rumours, believe the lies. There really nothing different. What's going on in the real world, there was a kid who was in her shoes and stop talking to her friends/ family because of something that happen to them or they couldn’t just take it no more and just started being by themselves and don’t care if they had friends or not.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower

Perks Of Being A Wallflower is written by Stephen Chbosky. Stephen Chbosky has written many novels but the the perks of being a wallflower was the book that peaked his success of being a writer. The perks of being a wallflower is about a fifteen year old boy name Charlie who is coping with the lost of his best friend who commited suicide over the summer, so charlie starts feeling anxiety about starting high school with no friends so he starts writing letters to a stranger about his life.

Later in the book charlie gets really close to his english teacher and he helps charlie with shyness eventually charlie meets a guy name patrick and have a really nice friendship from there first encounter with each other during class and after there little conversation patrick takes charlie to meet his step sister sam who charlie develops a crush on throughout the story. At the end of story a big secret charlie has been keeping from his parents is unrevealed to them which makes do some harsh things that lead him to go to the hospital and receive treatment and there in that hospital is where charlie sends off his last letter to the stranger which makes chairle notice that  he wants to get out of his head and into the real world, participating in life instead of just watching it fly by

I enjoyed reading this book I would recommend this book to any teen and up, because the book goes through a lot of rough moments that people in our generation would go through in their everyday life. This book shows that even if you are a shy wallflower you can always find the right people or person to help comfort you with their presence. These people could bring you out your shell and show you that you a bright star hiding behind your scars and flaws In life.

Tyrell

Tyrell By Coe Booth

This is the first book. I’m not sure if there is a second book to this. This book is about a young boy he is 15 years old and go by the name of Tyrell. He is growing up real fast with his dad being in jail and his mom not being able to take care of him and his little brother forces Tyrell to grow up and take responsibility so him and his brother don’t have to go back through the state. Tyrell is doing everything to prevent them from going back, he don’t want his little brother living this type of life.

Tyrell his mother and his brother is currently living in a really bad shelter called bennet. Tyrell hate living there, they have roaches everywhere in their room. Tyrell met a girl Jasmine at bennet, Jasmine is at Bennet because her sister and her boyfriend got into a bad argument that lead them to get put out of his apartment. Jasmine big sister is 18 years old their mom passed away when they were younger. Jasmine is usually always in the room by herself at bennet, so tyrell goes and spend the night with her sometimes because she don’t like to be alone. Tyrell has a girlfriend that takes good care of him because she knows what he’s going through. Her mom likes tyrell a lot because of how he treats her daughter.

I liked the book because it grabbed my attention on the first page I read. I’m not the type of person that likes to read so it was very surprising to me when I actually couldn’t put the book down. It makes me sad because they have to go through so much at a young age I hate they have to live that type of lifestyle. I would recommend you to read this book so you can get the main idea.

Allegedly

Allegedly is a book by Tiffany D. Jackson, Jackson has written two other books since writing Allegedly. All three books being about teen girls dealing with heavy topics and the aftermath of some type of traumatic event. Allegedly is a nonfiction novel about a young girl named Mary B. Addison who was convicted of killing a baby when she was nine years old.

Allegedly focuses on the aftermath of Marys crime, almost as if the reader is navigating through life with Mary. The book begins with Mary telling about how the crime she allegedly committed has affected her and her mother's life. Her relationship with her mother was always strained due to the implied mental illness her mother suffers from and is now worse than ever. Her mother only visits once every couple of months and the visits are very brief. Mary lives in a group home with other girls who have committed similar crimes, she's the weakest link and gets picked on by the other girls in the house. Mary knows she will eventually get out of the group home and that it's better than baby jail as she would call it. Once Mary turns eighteen she will no longer be a ward of the state and can leave the group home to start her new life. That is until Mary gets pregnant by a boy named Ted that she works at an old folks home with. She knows based on the nature of her crime that she will never be able to raise her baby, so Mary decides to fight her case and tell the world what really happened.

Allegedly was an interesting book that had a really attention grabbing plot, my only issue with the book is the ending. Once Mary gets pregnant she seems very adamant she's going to tell the truth so she can keep her baby, but by the end of  the book she's done a complete one eighty in her version of the truth. The ending and how Mary handles the situation feels very out of character for her. The entire book she tells us one thing and by the end she's telling us another, this makes Mary feel like an unreliable source.  Although I do think this book would be a good read for someone interested in the plot I believe that Jackson writes books for teen girls. If you're looking for a fast paced novel to keep you on your toes I would allegedly isn't the book for you. On the other hand if you're looking for a slower more complex novel allegedly would be a good read.

Ender's Shadow

Ender’s Shadow is spin off from the original Ender’s Game written by Orson Scott Card. Ender’s Shadow not as well loved as the original book, it’s still a good book in it’s own right. This is science fiction novel taking place at the same time as Ender’s Game, focusing on Bean’s ascension from living on the streets of Rotterdam, scrounging/scavenging for food and supplies to making his way up to a facility where they select and train the best potential Commanders. The theme of this book is the fight against authority.

This book is about Bean, an orphaned child no older than two years at the time is forced to live on the mean streets of Rotterdam where the older kids and bigger kids(bullies) terrorize the smaller and younger kids for all their resources. Eventually finding his way up to the Battle School, a training facility where the finest children in the world are sent to be tested, selected, and trained to one day become Commanders and officers of the International Fleet. In the hope that one day one of these Commanders will finally defeat the formics commonly known as the buggers, an alien species that has attacked humanity twice in the past and came close to destroying the entirety of the human species.

I loved this book because Bean an underrated side character from Ender’s Game who finally gets the spotlight he deserves. In the original book he’s portrayed as a smart kid who happens to befriend Ender and become his right hand man. In Ender’s Shadow he’s not only intelligent but he is the most intelligent kid at the facility even beating Ender by a large margin and this book give more deep insight into his thoughts, actions, and background. This book was mainly intended for young adults, I think a lot of other people would like book but I would recommend reading Ender’s Game first because Ender’s Shadow gives the feeling of adding in chapters to the first one that we’re missed.

Tyrell

Coe Booth

The book I read is “Tyrell” by Coe Booth. She’s also the author of “Kendra” and “Bronxwood”. Tyrell was published first in 2007, it’s about a teenage boy named Tyrell living with his mom and brother in a shelter while his dad is in jail. Then Kendra was published in 2008, which was about a teenage girl who doesn't know how it feels to have a real mother because she and her mother is 14 years apart and she lives with her grandmother while her mom is in college. Then, Bronxwood was published in 2011. This is about Tyrell’s life back in Bronxwood and about his pops getting out of jail and how Tyrell has to deal with this situation. Tyrell was a good book so I’m excited to read Bronxwood is about since it’s continuing onto the second chapter of Tyrell’s life. The genre of these books is young adult/drama.

The book Tyrell was about a boy named Tyrell who lives with his mother and his little brother. They got evicted because Tyrell’s dad went to jail for his 3rd time and his mother isn’t working. So, they’re living in shelters and in the book they’re currently living in a disgusting motel named Bennett. Troy feels in order to get him and his family out of there, he needs to make some money but he doesn’t wanna make illegal money cause he can’t go to jail so he starts DJing and throwing parties. “I ain’t looking to call all my pops friends cause most of them is into the same kinda illegal shit he into, and I don’t wanna end up where he at…”  -Coe Booth P.G. 108. Tyrell also has a girlfriend named Novisha and he’s in love with her. “I’m just looking at Novisha and wishing we have grown already and this was our place. She so perfect for me. It’s hard to explain, but she got everything I want in a women.” - Coe Booth P.G. 87. But right when Tyrell starts DJing and he gets enough money to get his family and apartment something else terrible happens.

I really enjoyed this book because there was never any dull moments while I was reading it. Tyrell went through some crazy things so after one thing it was always another. I love teenage drama books like the ones Coe Booth made and Bluford High books, genres like young adult/drama. They keep my attention because the situations and storylines in these books are relevant to me and my peer's lifestyles or what we’ve seen and been around. These books are actually interesting too because the drama they have in them is intense.

Broken

BROKEN , CJ LYONS

This book is about a young girl named Scarlet who’s dealing with a disease that could kill her at any moment in her life. She came to a realization that she wants to live a normal teenage life. So with Scarlet making this choice she decides she wants to go to school. A high school. She’s been homeschooled since she was around 5 because of her condition. With her being homeschooled for so long and hopping into a high school 3 weeks late she’s certain to have the attention of the whole school. The genre of this book is young adult fiction.

Scarlet lives with her mother who is also the school nurse. Once Scarlet started this school she immediately began to be bullied by the jocks. She also joined a peer group for the kids who have gone through trauma. During this process she has caught feelings for her mentor Jordan Summers. Jordan is the group mentor even though he has lots of issues so they basically mentor each other. Later on in the book a rivalry between the peer group and the jocks have started. And while all this is going on keep in mind that Scarlet could die any moment while figuring out the pieces to her life before it’s too late.

I loved this book because it’s suspenseful and it’s an adult fiction. This book deals with issues that happen in real teenagers lives such as suicides and insecurities. This book impacted me because it shows many different perspectives and I felt the characters emotions. This relates to my generation because suicide rates and drug use is very high and this book shows that there are outlets and resolutions to your issues. I would definitely rate this book 10/10, highly recommended.

The Boy in the Black Suit

The title of the book is The Boy in the Black Suit.  The Author is Jason Reynolds.  I think he is an amazing author.  He has written lots of books that everyone seems to love.  Some of the books he has written include, Ghost, When I was the Greatest, All American Boys and more.  He usually writes in the genre of fiction.

The story Is about a highschool boy named Matt.  He just recently lost his mother.  He only has one friend named Chris.  They are the best of friends.  There is semi conflict In this story.  Lots of people judging him because he always wears the same black suit (Even Matt’s best friend wants to know what is up with the black suit.  Matt been wearing it ever since his mom died.)

I like the book alot I think people should read this.  It is very good.  It will not  disappointed you.  I like the book because the main character is close to my age In because he Is In high school and another reason Is that the book does an okay job showing how people feel after they lose someone they love and how they deal with the aftermath of the situation.  The main target for this book was teenagers because we can relate to some of the stuff In the book .unlike adults but If an adult would like to read It they could .but there outlook would be different from ours.

I would say to give this book a chance It is not that long maybe two hundred fifty eight pages.  Words are kinda small but you can still see them.  I think people would like this book a lot.

Border Town: Quince Clash

Malin Alegria

This book has many others following to this one, Border Town; Quince clashes. The book I’m reading was the second book to come out, while I was reading it I had no clue that there was more than one book. The books that follow Quince Clash are Border Town#3: Falling to Fast, BorderTown#4: No Second Chances, and the first book Border Town#1: Crossing the line. All these books relate because they all have the same plot, young girl falls in love with a boy and drama happens with in family and friends in school.

This book is about a girl named Fabiola, whos family isn’t the wealthiest but tries to provide the best they can for each other. Fabi has always been bullied by a girl named Melodee and she made a bet in front of the whole school which is whoever has the best quince wins, but theresa twist to it who ever loses has to shave their head. Fabi’s dream was to go to New York but with their income it wasn’t possible at the time. With their income being so low Fabiolas mom was going to throw the best quince she could, but her grandma and her cousin decided to write to a Tv show where they pay for someone's quince and make their dream quince in to reality. It was a very low chance for Fabi to get chosen, but her family did whatever they had to do to make sure Fabi won the bet.

I liked this book a lot because not only can I relate to things that happen but also the things their family/friends do for each other out of love is so beautiful. Fabi’s grandma and cousin took a big risk knowing if the truth got out it could ruin everything. I feel like this book was written more for the youth but also the older audience would enjoy it as well because situations like these happen all the time and some mean a more to the youth when our parents might think it’s silly. I really suggest you read this book, it gives you childhood memories and also shows about the latino culture.

Kick-Ass

Kick-ass by Mark Millar

Currently I’m reading book 2 of this part of the series.

The only difference between his books is the first one I read is about a female mother wearing the same costume and mask as this kid that reading now. Another difference is that the female uses her hands to fight and the kid use his green sticks as a weapon.

Starting from the 1st book Dave is a somewhat normal kid he’s kinda weird but whatever. He wanted to become a superhero because he wants to be able to stand up for himself and hates crime. His 1st attempt at stopping a couple street vandals caused him to get his guts sliced. He makes a full recovery and for a while he didn’t wanna be kick ass no more because he didn’t believe in himself. Until one day he decided to put it on and a man is getting jumped and Dave has option to leave but he got into the fight. He was getting hurt and then started smacking em with green stick and next thing you know they one the ground and saved the dude getting brutally beaten. Since then he hasn’t stopped. Kick Ass wasn’t the only superhero in town many of them are fake and one went by the name red mist his dad is a mob boss so the kid is pretty rich and he partners up with kick ass just to only set him up. On the side there was a another type of hero I guess you could say big daddy and hit girl father and daughter. They are killing machines but they only kill bad people or just anyone that thinks they can mess with em. Anyways they needed kickass to join them to help take down the mob boss at first refuses but big daddy doesn’t give him much of a choice. When they got to the warehouse it all went fast first big daddy got shot up, and kick ass is strapped to an electric chair after when red mist held him at gunpoint. Eventually hit girl got loose and killed everyone insight got kickass and they fought everybody and won that fight.

I like this book because I love graphic novels, it’s almost like a watching a tv show when I read fast. But I’m totally loving the story line on this series, every chapter there’s a different plot twist and makes me wanna read more. I think this book was targeted for teens or kids who like action and adventure comic strips.

You should read this book if love action and fighting.

A Trick of the Light

A Trick of the Light, by Lois Metzger, is a stunningly unique masterpiece. Unlike most of her other published works, which were mainly Holocaust novels and anthologies, A Trick of the Light is a realistic fiction novel that depicts the story of Mike Welles - a young boy who, over time and with some help from the voice in his head, develops anorexia. This book mainly focuses on the theme of power - both in the loss of power and in the change of power.

Mike Welles was a normal 15 year old boy. He went to school, had friends, played baseball. He had everything under control. Until one day, he began hearing a voice in his head. “Don’t talk about it.” (pg. 6) This voice not only told him not confide in his friends, thus isolating him, the voice also made Mike think about the negative points in his life. How his parents never pay attention to him, or to each other. How big his belly has gotten, and how disgusting this should make Mike feel. Over time, with the help of a strange girl named Amber, Mike learns how to lose weight: by not eating and exercising. Throughout the entire book, Mike struggles with the voice in his head. With no real friends and absent parents, Mike spirals out of control.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I thought it was unique and a very good recreation of eating disorders. As someone who has experienced anorexia, I was very moved by this book because it was so relatable. The target audience would be teens and young adults, or anyone with an eating disorder. I feel like some people may get offended by this book, because of the rawness of it. Especially people that do not believe in eating disorders. Whether or not you believe in eating disorders, chances are, you know someone who does. You may even know someone who is struggling with an eating disorder. This book is extremely good at depicting the harsh realities of it. If you know someone with mental illness or an E.D, this book will help you understand their battle; if you yourself have mental illness or an E.D, this book will make you feel less alone. Even if you have no experience with either of those things - this book is still a must read, simply because of the brutal truths and amazing writing structure the author used.

Book Review by Adrianna R.

Bang!

The title of this book is Bang.  The Author’s name is Sharon G. Flake.  I don't really know any more books by her. I'm not a big reader. I did like this book though and want to share some information about it. But the theme of the book is i believe it is tough love.

The main character in my book is very unique.  He is 14 years old.   He has had a very hard life with his family.  He used to be real close with his family but that kind of fell apart.  It fell apart when his little brother was shot.   The shooting took a big toll on the family, especially his dad.

The death of his brother put a lot of pressure on him.  His dad turned abusive after his son died.  He decided he wanted him to grow up fast so he would not die as a kid.

Early in the book I had trouble following the plot.  It feels like it is all over the place.  At first it was mainly at his house.cc Mann and him and his friend keelee was at his house but after Mann got into a fight at school.  The fight was over some kid dissing on his dead little brother.  The fight got him kicked out of school.  When he got kicked out of school his dad wanted him to grow up and be a man.  He wanted him to read this book that talked about survival.  The book was a story were a child was left in the woods and making them find their way home.  The character in the book walked through the woods but eventually they did find their way home. Then when he got kicked out again he went to Keewee Grandam place and then to started to hustle people and that's were the plots have been.

This book was a little dry at first.  The story moved very slow until they went camping in the woods. While they were camping a bad storm was passing through.  The main character’s dad said he was going to go get the truch and he just left the camp ground and left the main Character, Jason, and his friend Keelee to walk home by themselves.  As the two try to get home they experience racism from some truckers.

When they did find their way home his dad kicked him out again.    The two boys went from there to Jason’s Grandma’s house.  There was a bunch of crazy people there.   She made Jason and Keelee go hustle.  The two had to try and fool people for there money.  They didn’t do that for long, before they decided to go out on their own and started painting business and was making money of them.   At one of their jobs the person did not pay them, so they were arguing and then the old man.  He pulls a gun out on Keele and so does Keelee and they both shot and then jason walks and see them both dead on the ground.

I real like this book and i usually don't read a book ever but if your someone that like to read and if you don't read you you can always listen to it  but I suggest this book big time this is a great book and I really enjoyed it with all action in the book. The target audience of this book would probably people that like sad story.

The Latehomecomer: A Hmong Family Memoir

The book that I am reading is call  “The Latehomecomer: A Hmong Family Memoir”, it’s by Kao Kalia Yang. Kao Kalia Yang was immigrated to St. Paul, Minnesota when she was only 6 years old. This book is a non-fiction, it’s a very interesting. She had publish 2-3 books, all the book are almost the same but it has a little bit of difference. The first book is call “The Latehomecomer: A Family Memoir”, the second book is call “The Song Poet: A Memoir Of My Father” and the last book is call “A Map Into the World”. All of them were from different years such as in 2008, 2016, and 2019. And as I saying up there, the book is a non-fiction b/c it talks about her life and talks about the important things that had happen to her and many more.

This story is about a Hmong girl name Kao Kalia Yang. Yes, the author is the main character. In the book she talks about her family and other thousands of Hmong families who made a  journey from the war in Laos to the refugee in Thailand. And she also included how many Hmong families were immigrated to the United State and to many other places around the world. In this book you will know how the Hmong people went through and how they have to move places to places to be safe. There wasn’t any place to call home after all the journey she went through as a child. The journey was a really personal experience. There were many important main characters in this book, it would be her parent, older sister, grandma, uncles and cousins. Each of them were have a really special bond with Kao. As you read more you’ll find out more about coming into the United State was like.

In my opinion I really like this book. This book is a very interesting book, it shows about someone point of view of the war and how it was like to be over there at that time. She wrote to the people are actually interested in others people life and how it was. This book is more like journalistic, if you are into those types of book I recommend you to read this book.  And if you aren’t into non-fiction and journalistic types of book then it’s okay to read another book or just give it a try, you might like it.

The Woman in Cabin 10

Ruth ware is the author of The Women in Cabin 10 , this is the only book i have read by this author but some of her other books are The Lying Game, and The Turn of the Key which is coming out this year. This book is a suspenseful murder mystery, the book itself is really unpredictable and mysterious, the plot goes in all sorts of directions.

Lo blacklock is a middle aged women who is a journalist, she has a drinking problem. The book starts with her being hungover and sensing something is wrong, her flat was being robbed at the exact moment and as the story progresses it shows that she has been at a disadvantage since then. For her job she gets to go on a luxurious cruise ship and be amongst influential people who are in jurnalism wanting to get a better perspective and to better their  career, but being on this boat was nothing but horrific for her with 2 murders, kidnapping, identity theft, and missing people. The crew members and other passengers believed Lo was unreliable, an alcoholic and just imagining things, most of this assumption came from her flat being robbed and broken into and the rumors that followed.

Personally I liked the book it was a good easy read, but i was not a fan of the abrupt ending and there were some details in the plot that had me wondering where it would lead to next but didn’t go anywhere almost like unfinished thoughts. The book had a really good storyline and it almost reminded me of The Girl on The Train which is also a really good book and i highly recommend that book to read once you finish this book.
